I'm sure many of you will have managed a game by now and have loved getting back out on the links.The feedback has been great, and I think we all appreciate the hard work Ally has been putting in. This past week the greens have been sprayed with a combination of seaweed, wetting agent and enhancer to help allow a gradual reduction in the height they are cut. Throughout lockdown they weren't able to be cut to their regular height but over the coming days and weeks they will be back to the normal speed.

Competitions News

Since re-opening last Friday many of you have been asking about the resumption of competitions. I can confirm from this Saturday 6th June there will be a Pro Shop Stableford running with a sweep and magic 2s. Depending on entries there will be 2 sections and the magic 2s will operate as normal on a select hole basis. In terms of cards they are collected from the Pro Shop and you mark your playing partners card. There is no swapping of cards at any point and you only sign the card you are marking. At the end of your round ideally take a photo of the card and email/message me the photo. If you absolutely cannot do this then I will have a box in the Pro Shop for you to drop the card but my preference would be to handle as few cards as possible. The competition will not be counting for handicap but will bring back a feel for competition golf. If successful the plan is to run these on a Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. All winnings will be paid into your Pro Shop Account. I will have 2 options for entry - pay £2 into the box in shop or pay by card in the shop. Hopefully this can work well until we are back playing Club Competitions.

As I come towards the end of my first week back I would like to say thank you to all of the golfers who have been out so far, you have stuck to the guidelines and rules in place and made it easy for me to manage the tee situation. As I have said previously we will continue to adapt the guidelines and procedures where and when we can. We are looking at when we can allow members to bring guests on for play and although no definite decision has been made just yet I would say it is likely to be Monday - Friday from 1/2pm onwards for guests and visitors. The demand for weekend tee times is still so high from members that we want to make sure you can all get a game so the re-introduction of guests and visitors at the weekends is probably a few weeks away.

The Pro Shop

The Pro Shop is open with safe distancing, hand sanitiser stations, only 2 customers allowed in at one time amongst the guidelines in place. Thank you for your support since re-opening it is greatly appreciated. Finally from me, many of you have been asking about Connor and when he will be back. Currently on furlough I am still unsure when I can afford and safely bring Connor back in but hopefully it won't be too long. He is itching to get back to work and is hoping to come down for a few games next week so if there are any members looking for a game I'm certain Connor will be keen to make up a two-ball.

World of golf

Since our last newsletter, Rory McIlroy – the number one ranked golfer in the world – has said he “had a hunch” that September’s Ryder Cup will be postponed.

Whilst no decision has been made, the European Tour has confirmed it'll be returning 'behind closed doors' in July. The first event will be the British Masters at Close House; the first of six consecutive tournaments on British soil.

Who knows, maybe by the time the second UK Swing comes around in October – Dunhill Links, Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship – things may look a little different.

Thoughts for the course

Chipping is a fine art. It requires precision and skill, both of which may need sharpening after a few months away from the golf course. No shame in that! So, here are a couple of points to remember.

Landing Spots

Don’t focus on the hole. Instead, pick out a spot – a patch of grass on the green – to land your ball on. Consider how the slope and speed of the green, the lie of the ball and the club you choose may affect where the ball finishes after landing.

Practise makes perfect

When on the chipping green, place a towel on your landing spot (as seen in the above image) and take aim. As you get the hang of it, you can fold the towel to give yourself a smaller, more challenging target to work with.
