Club news

Club Finals Day

We start off this week with the results from what is fair to say was a gruelling day for any game of golf never mind a 36 hole final! On Saturday we had 4 matches taking place, in the Ladies Handicap Final Liz Masson was taking on Morag Clarke, Ladies Scratch Final was Deirdre Moffat vs Elaine Shepherd.

In the Gents Handicap Final Jim Lafferty was taking on Rob Kirkpatrick and in the Gents, Scratch Final Alex Cargill was up against Gary Smith. Despite the horrible conditions some great golf was played and I have been reliably informed we have new winners in every category!

Morag, Deirdre, Rob and Alex all won their respective matches, congratulations to you all and commiserations for the runners up.

Junior news

The next steps

We had the juniors along for a few holes on Saturday afternoon, we caught a slight break in the weather and managed to play a few holes on finals day. Connor guided them round and it is clear to see the progress they are making.

We are all aware of the need for more youngsters playing the game and I feel like we have made some great steps forward this year getting more and more youngsters onto the course. We will continue to run 6 hole mini-competitions for them for the remainder of the season and hopefully, we can grow our section again next season.

Course Maintenence

From the week beginning Monday 9th September, we have some routine, necessary maintenance work taking place on the greens. The disruption should be minimal and if the weather is kind to the Greenkeeping Team they should be able to complete all of the work in 1 day.

I have now finished the 18 hole course management advice but I want to look at one more area of course management! The vast majority of golfers now have a GPS device of some sort but are you using it effectively?! Where is the most common miss amongst club golfers? Undoubtedly it is short of the target.

Too often golfers look at the distance they have, say for example 150 yards and say "easy that’s an 8 iron" when in reality they probably hit 1 out of 10 8 irons 150 yards. I want you to try taking at least 1 extra club on every 2nd shot you play for the next week and report back to me if you see any improvement on your misses. With the exception of 2 or 3 holes very rarely will you be in serious trouble if you are long of the pin. So give it a go and let me know the results.

With the end of the season fast approaching what better time than to work on your game and look at a winter project. Why the recent surge?

Here’s some homework for you: the next time you're watching golf on TV, keep an eye on the number of pros using putters with larger heads. Whilst some golfers still prefer the traditional blade style putters from years gone by, over 60% of PGA Tour players have a larger headed putter in their bag today – the question is: why?

High MOI putters

These are all to do with stability, feel and alignment. When you take a look at TaylorMade’s Spider X and TP Black Copper Ardmore 3 putters (pictured above) you will see what we mean.

The larger head style of both putters is designed to increase MOI, which is crucial as it means the putter face will twist less at impact, especially when struck away from the sweet spot.

How do they work?
