The Arbroath Gent's Open
What a weekend we had at Arbroath! On Saturday we had 191 players taking part in the Gents Open, which started at 6am and finished a little after 7pm! There was some fantastic scoring including a scratch 65 from Arbroath Member Mark Davidson! An incredible score at any time never mind in the Gents Open! It was great to see a mixture of both members and visitors supporting the event. Two big thank you’s to our sponsors, Stewart Milne Homes & Mark Drummond from PD Cars. Tam Smith from Thornton Golf Club was the winner of the nearest the pin hole sponsored by PD Cars and despite not making the hole in 1 to win the top prize I think it is fair to say he was delighted to hit it to 59cm and win a £500 Pro Shop Voucher! Well done to all of the winners, for the local guys your vouchers are in the Pro Shop ready to be collected. Click here to view full results. |
The Links & Cadman Finals
On Sunday we had the finals of the Links & Cadman competitions. Both finals took place over 36 holes and there was some great golf played all round. In the Links Final, Paul Teviotdale came out on top against Gary Pyott in a match that was played to a fantastic level, producing a lot of birdies. In the Cadman Final which is a handicap final both players are off of a 15 handicap so it was played as a scratch game. Jason Parker who is in his first year as a member was taking on Paul Murphy who let’s just say has a little more experience than Jason! Another game which produced a lot of great golf and also played in a fantastic manner with Paul helping out Jason in the build-up to the match by going over rules, procedures and what to do if he wasn’t sure in any particular scenario which I thought was great to see. In the end, the experience paid off and Paul won the Cadman trophy for what I believe is his third time! Quite a feat! Well done to all, I would also like to say well done to Lee Strachan for the organising of the event and also for refereeing the links final, and finally to Gary Oulton who refereed the Cadman Final.

Pro's Day
This year you have a new event on the calendar! On Saturday 20th July I will be running my first Pro’s Day here at Arbroath. The event is open to all members, gents, ladies, seniors and juniors. The format will be an Individual Stableford, with prizes for all categories. You book your own tee times as normal. There will be nearest the pin prizes at all of the par 3s, as well as other on-course prizes which will all be clearly informed on the day! There will also be a beat the pro/par 3 challenge in place which again will be detailed on the day! Excited yet?! Entry is only £5 and all prizes won from the day will be from the Pro Shop. Finally, fingers crossed we have a great day for it and as many of you as possible can attend.

Course Management - 11th Hole This week we are onto hole 11, definitely a hole that you would consider a birdie chance! That being said there are 2 fairway bunkers either side of the fairway which can catch a stray drive and then the green is well guarded by 2 bunkers either side suddenly this isn’t sounding like such a birdie chance! The positives, however, are the distance of this hole. At 326 from the medal tee, it is the shortest hole on the course, a drive finding the fairway will leave a short iron or possibly just a pitch onto the green. For me, the key is all about judging the distance for the second shot. |
The vast majority of the holes at Arbroath are quite undulating and for me, that actually makes it easier to judge distance. The 11th, however, is more or less completely flat and sometimes it is hard to trust the distance. So make sure you get your second shot all the way to the hole and give yourself that birdie opportunity! |
It wouldn't be possible without them
The feedback over the weekend was fantastic regarding the course, I think given the small team of Greenkeeper that we have here at Arbroath they are doing a fantastic job. It cannot go unmentioned all of the voluntary work that goes on to do “small” jobs like clearing the burns etc around the course. So on behalf of all of the golfers who have been lucky enough to play Arbroath this year, well done to Ally and his team and thank you to those of you who give up your own time to make Arbroath look as good as it currently is. |
72 Hole Challenge for Macmillan Cancer
Last Tuesday I took part in a 72 holes in one day challenge for Macmillan Cancer. A friend of mine lost his mum to cancer a couple of years ago and this was the reason for partaking in the day. We started off a little after 5 am and played 2 rounds at Arbroath, had a 10-minute pit stop for lunch then played rounds 3 & 4 at the Buddon & Burnside at Carnoustie. There were 7 of us taking part and we managed to raise a little over £2000! Thank you to everyone who kindly donated, I would certainly do it again next year but I’m not so sure all 7 would! Click here to watch a short video of us finishing up on our 72nd hole. |
