Welcome to our latest edition of the weekly newsletter, where we keep you up to date on everything you need to know going on here at Arbroath Golf Links. This week we look at the 9th hole in our course management section, we announce our Cobra Fitting Day and we remind you to not miss out on our TaylorMade specials... Enjoy the read! |
Some Frustrating News... We start this week’s newsletter with some frustrating news. We have been losing literally hundreds of balls from the driving range over the past couple of weeks. We ask that all members who are out on the golf course, particularly in the evenings, could report any suspicious activity either to myself in the Pro Shop or to Club staff. We have been in contact with local police who are looking into the situation and will be monitoring the course and range when they can but if members can also look out hopefully we can put a stop to it.

Onto Happier News... Onto happier news now! My Assistant Connor has been taking part in his first few events as an Assistant PGA Professional, last week he was at a single round event at Hayston Golf Club. Despite some good stuff, a double and triple bogey were costly and added up to a total of 77. However there were plenty of positives for Connor to take away and learn from. On Monday this week, Connor was taking part in Open Championship Qualifying at Panmure Golf Club. Sadly the weather was brutal and another big number on the 13th Hole saw Connors hopes of making it to Final Qualifying dashed. Again, another great experience and a big learning curve for Connor who is only just beginning his career as a Professional Golfer. I would like to note that Connor was taking part at probably the toughest of all the venues. Panmure was the only course out of 13 across the UK that didn’t record a single score under par!
At my time of writing Connor is taking part in the Scottish Young Pro's Championship at West Lothian Golf Club. Fingers crossed he does well and uses his experiences from these other rounds to post some good numbers. I will update his progress next week.

Course Management - 9th Hole
This week we are onto the 9th Hole at Arbroath, at 373 yards it won’t always play the longest but into a stiff breeze it can be a real test, particularly with the burn meandering its way across the fairway just short of the green. Off the tee it’s time to open up the shoulders and try to get one down there as far as possible. Even if you are a little right it isn’t the end of the world, which is a pleasant change at Arbroath!
The second shot requires a lot more thought, particularly if the burn is on your carry distance. If this is the case then play short and go for a pitch and putt par, better this than go for it not make the carry then bring a 6 or 7 into the equation!

The greens is another of my favourites with 2 tiers, and being on the correct tier is key to making that birdie or par putt! I even managed to bump into a member as he was about to tee off on the 9th to show us how it’s done! |

These are two events you definitely don’t want to miss, particularly the Gents Open which has a fantastic prize for a hole in one or nearest the pin at the 7th hole thanks to Mark Drummond from PD Cars in Carnoustie. Our Sponsor for the Gents Open is Stewart Milne Homes who have very kindly agreed to sponsor this year's event and this will help with some new signage around the course and club. |

Cobra Fitting Day If you weren’t able to come along to our Cobra Fitting Day earlier in the season then I have good news. Next Friday the 5th of July, we have a Cobra Fitting Day on from 2pm-6pm. The course is closed that afternoon in preparation for the Open on the Saturday so what better way to spend your Friday afternoon than by trying the best Cobra has to offer!

Is there a better time than summer to be out playing golf? Silly question, really. So, now you’ve got your cap on and you’re lathered in sun lotion, it’s time to make sure the most important part of your body (arguably) is protected: your eyes. |
