Course news

Course Management - The 4th Hole

This week we look at the 4th hole, the first of 4 par 3s at Arbroath. At 166 yards from the medal tee, surrounded by a burn to the front and right of the green along with four bunkers guarding the green, it really is a test.

The green slopes from left to right so even a ball making the putting surface requires plenty of concentration for the putt.

My whole reason for doing this weekly hole guide is to try to get each of you to think your way around the golf course better.

Normally I wouldn’t suggest laying up at a par 3 but in this case I wouldn’t rule it out, there is one particular member I know of who never goes for this green, (he shall remain nameless!) and quite regularly makes a 3 by chipping and putting.

For the longer hitter the preferred miss would be left and a little long so make sure you take plenty club and aim for the left half of the green regardless of where the pin is situated. I look forward to hearing your feedback on how you approach this cracking par 3.

Course Irrigation System

The Irrigation system is now fully up and running! It has been a bit of a saga to say the east but now we have all the water we need. The Links would like to thank everyone for their patience during this tricky time. The Greenkeeping Team will be be able to repair the areas where the irrigation work has taken place.

Please note if your ball ends up in any of these areas, treat as GUR. This will remain the case until these areas have fully healed.

A Clear Winner...

Finally this week, despite not managing to watch a great deal of the USPGA Championship the past week, it was clear to see there was only ever one winner from the start, despite a minor wobble towards the end of round 4.

Brooks Koepka seems to be the man for the Majors at the moment - his record over the last eight Majors with four wins and a few nearly wins is incredible. I came across this little quote earlier today from 2013 and though it was worth an entry into the newsletter! Congrats Brooks, roll on the next Major in three weeks time at Pebble Beach!

"I think coming over here will help us years down the road. We'll learn from these experiences and take them on and hopefully win some Major Championships"

Most overlooked club in the bag?

Thankfully, the penny has dropped when it comes to the importance of getting custom fitted for a new driver or set of irons. Unfortunately, we still see the vast majority of golfers overlook this process when it comes to their fairway woods, but why?

How often do you use yours?

“I wouldn’t use it often enough”
“It's too expensive”

Yeah, I guess if you’re not concerned with shooting lower scores and maximising your potential then a custom fitted fairway wood isn’t that important.
