Arbroath Artisan Golf Club Prize Evening
I attended my first Arbroath Artisan Golf Club Presentation of Prizes Evening this past Saturday. The night started off with a little bit of panic, not from myself but for Vice-Captain David Clarke as the guest speaker for the evening failed to turn up! It turned out he had put the wrong date in his diary, however Lindsay Ewart and Paul Teviotdale made a mad dash round to the speakers house, he lives locally, and managed to catch him and all ended up well!
I would like to congratulate all of the winners from the 2018 season and wish you all the best of luck in the 2019 season. |

I would also like to mention a few winners from the evening, to Brian Swankie on his victory in the Cadman Links Championship, it was clear to see Brian was over the moon with the victory. Well done to Paul Teviotdale on winning the Links Championship. In the James Kirk Handicap Championship well done to winner David Cargill. And to one of the main events of the season, the Club Championship, I hear the final was a tense affair going all the way to the 36th hole where Gordon Middleton edged out Steven Cargill. Congratulations to both players on making the final and well done to Gordon on another Club Championship victory. I would also like to mention Jamie Blake on a great season, Jamie picked up 5 individual prizes and also a winner’s prize for a doubles competition, I don’t want to repeat myself but he also finished the season with a fantastic 64 a few weeks ago, so well done and all the best for 2019, I really look forward to being a part of the Arbroath Artisan Golf Club for next season and the many to come. One final mention goes to Mhari and Ricky Hannah, this was there last Presentation as they are moving on to pastures new, although I have only known them a short time, they have been very helpful and I wish them all the best going forward.

Assistant Update
I haven’t mentioned Connor in my last few newsletters so I thought I better give you an update on his progress! This week he is off on holiday so don’t worry if you don’t see him he’s still here just not at the Pro Shop this week! Last week Connor was playing his 4th event in the Midlands Alliance at The Fairmont St Andrews, conditions were extremely tough but Connor managed round in 75, +2, and finished 2nd for the 2nd time in 4 outings in the Alliance. Connor is also now well underway in his 1st year of the PGA course and is working hard on a couple of assignments. He also has his Level 1 Coaching Course coming up amongst many other PGA related seminars and classes. In early February he will be away for a Residential week up in Dornoch where the Assistant are put through their paces on a range of subjects all of which helps shape the path of their career. I will continue to keep you updated on Connors progress but as ever he is always up for a chat or a few holes of golf so why not pop into the shop or arrange a few holes with him.

Course update
It has been another busy week for the Greenkeeping Staff as they continue to work through the Winter Programme. Sadly one area that has slowed them down are the amount of pitch marks they are having to fix which is obviously the golfer’s responsibility. The 2 photos below were taken on Saturday morning and can only have come from members. Please can everyone not only repair their own pitch mark but if they come across another please also repair it, and feel free to mention to the rest of your playing partners about repairing them. If these continue to go un-repaired then a decision could be made to play of Temporary Greens for the whole of the Winter which no one would want. I’m sure you will all agree it is an easy and quick task to repair a pitch mark and there is no excuse for these to go un-repaired.

Tip of the Week - Posture
I have enjoyed another steady week of coaching, I really enjoy getting out on the range or putting green to help out golfers of any ability. This week rather than talk about a particular lesson I have decided to start a “Tip of the Week” section. Over the course of the next few weeks I will put a single tip for you to try. Hopefully it will be relevant for many of you and I will look at a different section each week. For this week I want to look at posture. Posture is not only important at address but also throughout the swing, so often I see golfers who start off in a really good position but lose their posture as they make their backswing. This then makes find the centre of the club face much more difficult and you begin to rely on timing rather than technique. So this week’s tip is “Maintain Posture Throughout”. Below I have put an image of a lesson I gave this week where John is working on doing just that. The right hand picture is at address and the left is at impact. John isn’t too far away from where we would like him to be and with another couple of weeks work John will be in a better position to consistently find the middle of the club face.

Westwood wins again Lee Westwood rolled back the years to claim his first European Tour title since 2014, as he shot a flawless final round of 64 to win the Nedbank Challenge. The Englishman carded six birdies and an eagle on Sunday, finishing three shots clear of overnight leader Sergio Garcia, who finished on 12-under. Westwood, who is a former World Number One, mentioned in his post-round interview that he has "got a bit of a process" he’s going through with his golf swing, which is helping him see and hit better shots. It goes to show that it’s never too late to make swing changes, even if you’re a top golfer.

Just remarkable... With the new Rules of Golf coming into play in January 2019, it’s more important than ever to pay close attention to the laws of the game; something which European Tour hopeful Gian-Marco Petrozzi found out the hard way last week. Petrozzi missed out on a potential place in the final stage of Q-School, after being penalised two strokes for ‘improving his line of play’. The Englishman was playing his final hole and had to hit a shot over a fairway bunker – to pace his yardage, he walked through the bunker and then raked his footprints in the sand before hitting his shot, resulting in an infringement of Rule 13-2 (improving your line of play). If you’re ever unsure of a ruling whilst out on the course, be sure to give the pro shop a call or come and speak to us after your round.

It's time to stop putting it off - Christmas is getting closer and closer, so you need to consider what will be going under the tree later this year. We're not just talking about the presents that you buy for loved ones and friends, but also what you want to be unwrapping come December 25th. |
| Garmin Approach S10 | A golfer who is not utilising the immense help that a GPS device provides is putting themselves at a major disadvantage over their playing partners. Knowing how far you have to the green (front, middle and back) as well as hazards is vital to hitting your next shot with confidence, which you can get from the Approach S10. |
| Garmin Approach S60 | If, however, you want a little bit more style and information from your GPS then we'd suggest Garmin's Approach S60. The choice of straps means you can choose one to suit your lifestyle off the course, whilst its full-colour maps and touchscreen face eliminates any guesswork during your round. |
