Under the current Rules of Golf, if a player makes a stroke on the putting green and the ball then hits the unattended flagstick that was left in the hole, the player gets the general penalty (17-3). However, under the proposed changes, there will be no penalty if a ball played from the putting greens hits a flagstick left in the hole (13.2b). Players will be able to choose whether they want the flagstick left in, removed or attended. The R&A say this change will improve the general speed of play but be careful, the ball can easily bounce out of the hole when hitting a flag!
