Why are driver heads limited to 460cc?
This was set when drivers leapt from 250cc in 1995 (the first mass produced titanium drivers) to 500cc in 2002. Improving R&D confirmed that larger heads have a higher moment of inertia (MOI), which means that they twist less as impact resulting in straighter shots. At this point, golf’s governing bodies stepped in to ensure further technology improvements didn’t diminish the skill level needed to play well off the tee. What are the benefits?
Larger headed 460cc drivers, like the Lynx Black Cat, give you the biggest head possible, which means you can miss the middle of the face now and then and still hit a good shot. This is because they have more room for wider or taller faces, plus a forgiving, higher MOI that adds forgiveness. |
